Emotional Changes During Pregnancy

While pregnancy is an exciting time, all of the changes that go along with it can be overwhelming. Feeling sad or worried is normal and is in a large part due to changes in hormone levels. Mood swings are particularly common in the first trimester. That is when hormone levels are rising and falling to signal different stages in pregnancy.

The prospect of a new baby brings many changes. Expectant parents often worry about the pregnancy, how the baby will effect their lives, labor and delivery as well as the responsibility of parenting. Learning and preparation will lessen the anxiety. Speak to experienced mothers, take a class, read a book and ask your doctor, or the baby's future doctor, questions. Many resources exist to help you navigate through parenthood. Remember to be supportive of your partner. Chances are, they are scared too.

Pregnancy dramatically changes your body. While these changes signal that a new life is inside of you, they may also be hard to adjust to. Some days you may feel fat and worry about returning to your pre-pregnancy body. Again, these feelings are normal. Take care of yourself. Regular rest, relaxation and exercise will help both your physical and emotional well being.
