  • Stress Defined
Stress is defined as an upset in the body's balance due to physical, mental or emotional stimuli. When stress occurs, the body undergoes several physiological changes and adrenaline, sugar and fat are released. The immune system is also adversely affected, inhibiting the disease-fighting functions of the body. Extreme psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression may develop as a result of stress.

Stress manifests itself in different ways, including fatigue, chronic headaches, irritability, swings in appetite or mood, low self esteem and diminished sex drive.

The first step to avoiding stress is identifying the main cause. For example, too much caffeine, sugar and alcohol may lead to higher stress levels. Smoking also puts physical stress on the body. Cut cigarettes and unhealthy foods out of your life and follow a well-balanced diet.

Other ways to rid your life of stress include getting regular exercise and sleeping at least eight hours a night. Relaxation techniques, such as massages, meditation and aromatherapy, article have also helped people relieve stress. There are a number of herbal remedies that have calming effects. These include kava, valerian and lemon balm.

Those under severe stress may want to take supplements of certain nutrients and vitamins. Consult a physician before taking any. Also, limit your intake of caffeine before and after stressful situations. Cut back on salt, especially if you have high blood pressure. And, although alcohol may seem like a stress reliever in a pinch, it actually drains the body of important nutrients.
